Where to Stay for MCRD Graduation
Your Marine graduates from boot camp at MCRD San Diego on a Friday morning — with Family Day on Thursday — and families fly in from all over the country to be there. Where you stay shapes the whole trip: these are early mornings (the base gate opens at 6:30 AM), emotional days, and usually three generations traveling together.
My SD Rental's lofts, apartments, and cottages sit in Little Italy, Bankers Hill, and downtown San Diego — roughly a 10-minute drive from MCRD's Gate 5 on Washington Street, and just as close to San Diego International Airport. Book direct with a local company and the platform fees on Airbnb and VRBO simply aren't there — see how much the Airbnb fee actually costs you.
How a graduation trip usually runs
- Wednesday — Arrive. Many families attend the evening Family Meet & Greet dinner on base.
- Thursday — Family Day. Gate 5 opens 6:30 AM; the Motivational Run is at 8:30 AM — your first sight of your Marine in 13 weeks. Liberty on base runs 11:45 AM–5:30 PM.
- Friday — Graduation. Ceremony at 10:00 AM on the Parade Deck (be seated by 9:45). Afterward, your Marine's 10 days of boot leave begin.
- The weekend — Most families stay through Saturday or Sunday with their Marine before everyone heads home.
That's a 3–5 night stay for most families — long enough that a hotel room (or two, or three) stops making sense.
Why graduation families book a rental instead of a hotel
- Everyone under one roof. Parents, grandparents, and siblings in one loft or cottage — a living room to actually sit and visit in, instead of perching on hotel beds.
- A real kitchen. The first home-cooked meal after 13 weeks of chow hall is a thing your Marine has been dreaming about. So is a fridge stocked with their favorites.
- In-unit laundry and room to spread out — uniforms, dress blues photos, and a lot of luggage all need space.
- Parking included at most rentals, so the 6:00 AM drive to Gate 5 is just keys and go — no valet line, no parking garage hunt. (Our cottages don't have dedicated parking.)
- A local on the phone. We've hosted in San Diego for 10 years, with more than 15,000 stays. Questions about the area, the base, or your dates? Call (619) 567-2972 and talk to someone here.
A thank-you for your family's service
Hosting graduation families is one of the privileges of being a San Diego company. As a small thank-you for your family's service, My SD Rental offers a special discount to military families on direct bookings. Just mention the graduation when you book or call (619) 567-2972, and inquire for details — we're glad to apply it.
Which neighborhood fits your family?
Little Italy — our largest cluster of lofts and apartments, and the closest thing to a home base for graduation week: coffee for the early mornings, San Diego's best food street for the celebration dinners, and an easy run up Washington Street to Gate 5. (More in our Little Italy neighborhood guide.)
Bankers Hill — quieter streets above downtown, home to our cottages and houses — the pick for larger family groups who want a house feel, near Balboa Park for the off hours.
Downtown — apartments near the waterfront and the Gaslamp, a short walk to the USS Midway — the outing every military family ends up loving.
Booking tips from a local
- Confirm your Marine's company date first. Graduations run most Fridays, but company dates shift — check the official schedule at mcrdsd.marines.mil before locking in travel.
- Book as early as you can.~21,000 recruits a year graduate from MCRD, and their families all need somewhere to stay the same Wednesday-to-Sunday window. The good places near the Depot go first.
- Bring REAL ID. Adults need a REAL ID-compliant license or a U.S. passport for base access; drivers need license, registration, and insurance.
- Leave early on Thursday and Friday. Gate 5 lines and vehicle searches take time. Staying 10 minutes away means a sane wake-up instead of a stressful one.
